Environmental Hazzard started out as Chris Faiken and some schoolmates back in 1986, playing S.O.D. and Metallica covers like any other high-school kids (Chris took the band’s name from his high-school health textbook). After going through the usual revolving-door lineup changes, Chris met Marty Glozer that fall and everything changed.

When Chris’s developing talents as a guitarist and songwriter were coupled with Marty’s inventive lyrics and unique vocal delivery, the embryonic stages of the band’s current sound were formed. The duo crafted their first songs together (including the first incarnation of “Blown Away”) and set about looking for the right rhythm section.

Slam Cisek and Jamie Willis joined up shortly thereafter (on bass and drums respectively) and the foursome entered the Cleveland music scene with a vengeance, quickly rising above the glamour boys and one-dimensional no-talents. As the band’s popularity rose, there was only one thing to do: lay down some of EH’s ferocity on tape.

The band entered Mars Studio in Cleveland in the fall of ’89 to record their first 16-track, six-song effort, produced by Bill Koriecky. Despite a low budget and the band’s inexperience in the studio, Environmental Hazzard’s inherent talent shone through and the tape was a national success in the music underground, gaining airplay on college radio and raves from everyone who heard it.

The band continued to grow and mature, and as a result of that process, Jamie Willis was replaced by Dave Zales behind the drum kit. The band also added a second guitarist, Tommy Bourne, and entered a period of intense writing and practicing in preparation for the recording of their first full-length album.

Bill Koriecky was stunned by the band’s new material, calling the brilliant One Stands Alone “the best thing I’ve ever been part of.” The word of the day for Environmental Hazzard was growth. Marty had matured immeasurably, displaying a new versatility as a singer. Chris’s fretwork placed him in the same elite category as those masters he’d idolized as a young music student only a few years before. Slam and Dave showed that Environmental Hazzard had finally found the right rhythm section as they laid a solid foundation for the music and added their own personal stamp on the tunes.

Marty’s growth as a lyricist was evident as well. His lyrics are intensely personal, totally non-cliché, and essential to the music they complement. The lyrics run the gamut from social issues (Blown Away, Chivalry Infection) to personal reflections (The Cutting Edge is about dedication, persisting to reach one’s goals; What Evil Brings discusses terror and what gives people their nightmares) and lyrical stories (Blissful Credence and Ends of Bickering are drawn from short stories Marty has written). While the band’s music and lyrics are totally serious, they can have fun too, as evidenced by the catchy When Tomorrow is Today — described by Marty as “our little Beastie Boy meets the crunch-of-doom song… about the attitudes and egos (of other bands and of promoters).”

The album was finished in March of 1991, and the band set out to find a record company that would have the vision to treat their music as more than “product” and give it the attention it deserved. That brought them in contact with the fledgling Sin Klub Entertainment, and the process of turning their work from master tapes to a new release began. Meanwhile, the band returned their lengthy absence from the limelight and reaffirmed their position as masters of the live performance. Highlights included sharing the stage with everyone from Wrathchild America to Non-Fiction to All! During this time, John Dalton was brought in to replace Tommy Bourne, who had departed shortly before the recording of One Stands Alone. Most recently, longtime bassist Cisek (who appears on the album) split amicably with the group, to be replaced by Tom Keeper.

Finally, after numerous delays, Sin Klub Entertainment will be releasing One Stands Alone in fall 1992. The band is currently playing and rehearsing, gearing up for extensive touring to support One Stands Alone.

Environmental Hazzard knows that talent, persistence, and dedication will pay off in the end. One listen to One Stands Alone will prove that to any listener. . . this is a group that knows “the cutting edge” and makes it their home, far from the current trend and the path of least resistance, light-years away from cliché and categorization. One Stands Alone. . . and no one else comes close.
